You are probably aware that there have been previous discussions about the VSL gearbox on this forum. Apparently the VSL lathes were originally made with a gearbox that was different to the standard South Bend style 'Norton' gearbox. WebMay 14, 2007 · Some of the differences are; 1- Tappered roller bearings in the spindle 2- L-00 spindle nose 3- 1 1/2 spindle bore 4- variable speed from 50 to 2400 rpm 5- leadscrew reverse gears are on ball bearings 6- electric switchable brake on the motor 7- ball thrust bearings on the crossfeed and compound screws, just like my Harrison L-6.
